Winter Riding Tips

Beginning fall 2017, the full Hubway system is open all year long in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville, so this winter your Hubway ride will stay your fastest way to get around Greater-Boston area despite the shorter days and cold weather. No matter if you are riding your own bike or a Hubway, using these few tips and tricks for cold weather riding can still make biking in the winter safe and fun.

UPDATE: Thursday 8/17 is your last chance to get a $1 single ride through Hubway's New Mobile App! While most of Commonwealth Avenue has been closed to motor vehicle traffic between Kenmore Square and Packard's Corner from July 26 to August 16, Hubway is your solution to get you where you need to go (and beat the crowds while doing it).

Harborfest

With hundreds of activities over Independence Day weekend at Boston’s best landmarks, this family-friendly event is the country’s largest Fourth of July festival. Activities include the annual opening ceremony at Faneuil Hall, historical reenactments, Freedom Trail walks, boat tours, live entertainment and much more!

In order to accommodate a construction project along Mass Ave, the Harvard Square at Mass Ave/Dunster Hubway station is scheduled to be moved down the block, during which time it will be out of order and inaccessible on Monday, June 26, from approximately 9:30am - 12:30pm. Please note: this should not affect access during the morning rush hour commute .

Join Hubway and Celebrate Boston's Pride Parade on Saturday, June 10th. We are excited to announce that we will be riding in the parade this year and unveiling a new set of "Stronger Together" to honor the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and all people who have helped lead the way to a more inclusive, equitable, respectful, and aware society.

25 projects from 22 entrants were submitted. Some were artistically creative, while others relied heavily on analysis to make their points. Some were constructively critical of Hubway's challenges, and one in particular used a combination of all those things... to make fun of us.

Price Change

Hubway's membership pricing is changing today for the first time since 2012. A few weeks ago we sent our existing members a note to let them know about the upcoming changes. Today the changes go into effect.

In celebration of the 2017 Hubway Data Challenge presented by Microsoft, we teamed up with General Assembly to host a crash course on data visualization. Those fortunate enough to grab a seat to the sold-out event had the opportunity to learn the history and fundamentals of data visualization as well as brainstorm ideas for the Challenge with a rich assortment of designers, programmers, students, and enthusiastic Hubway riders. With seasonal station redeployment beginning a few weeks ago, we were hoping for clear skies and sunny days for your rides as we head into spring. Alas, New England's Smarch weather is upon us! It is possible that with blizzard conditions on the way, the Hubway system will temporarily shut down. While it's open, now is the time to review through our winter riding tips below. Whether you're riding a Hubway or your own bike, there are a number of things you should keep in mind to prepare for cycling in the cold-weather.

Good news out of Hubway HQ! Hubway stations based in Boston began deployment for the season on February 27th, the earliest in Hubway's history. The upcoming schedule of deployments is still being finalized, so please check back here for specific station updates to see when your favorite stations are returning.

Due to the sever weather, Hubway will temporarily close at 3 PM on Sunday, February 12th, for the safety of our riders and staff. Following the storm, Hubway field staff will be working to clear stations, after which the Cambridge stations will reopen. The stations in Boston, Brookline, and Somerville, which are already closed, will remain closed until later in the season.

Unlike in previous years, stations will remain in operation until the day of their removal to provide for additional riding. All hibernating stations are expected to relaunch in spring 2017, and all Cambridge-based stations are open year-round.
