The City strongly supports bicycling for all kinds of trips including commuting, errands leisure – in fact, any kind of trip you might take! And bicycling is hugely popular; the number of people bicycling in Cambridge has risen by 150 percent in the past ten years. Recent surveys suggest that 7-9 percent of Cambridge residents already use a bicycle for their trips, and with the Hubway bike share program, we hope that cycling will continue to gain popularity.
Cambridge is working with many partners including businesses, institutions and agencies to expand the existing Hubway network in the Boston metropolitan area. Bike share in Cambridge continues the network of bike share stations in the Boston metro area, expands efficient transportation choices, and promotes convenient bike options throughout the city.
The first year in Cambridge will include 24 bike sharing stations in various locations including the squares, business districts and universities. As the system expands in future years, stations will be located throughout the city. The entire system in Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline and Boston is interchangeable so you can use any bike or station at your convenience. Need to ride from Cambridge into Boston? No problem! Pick up at any station in our city, ride across the river, and drop it off at your destination.
Are you a Cambridge business owner interested in having a station near your business? The City of Cambridge welcomes partners who can fund the installation and maintenance of stations. Click here for more information about funding a station near you.
We are grateful for the following stewards that support bike sharing as one of the newest and greenest transportation programs in the country.
